Jess and her kids.
In the spring of 2014, my 3.5-year-old son Judah and I were at our local Starbucks in Fairfax. Judah noticed that the people in line looked sad and wanted to hand out flowers to make them smile. We walked to the florist next-door and grabbed some daisies. Judah walked up to each customer in line and handed them one. He was so delighted by how everyone reacted to a simple daisy that we came up with the idea for me to crochet coffee sleeves for the customers. With the managers permission we started to hand out 100 free crochet coffee sleeves at time to the customers in line.
We put an encouraging note on the sleeve. Judah tells each customer that they are loved and that they matter.
Since we started this "encouraging it forward" movement, we have handed out over 3,000 free crochet coffee sleeves. My daughter Magnolia has now joined us. At the giveaway events we let the customers pick out their favorite sleeve and if its available we let them take it home for free. We only ask that they "encourage it forward" by encouraging someone else with an act of kindness.
I do not sell my coffee sleeves, patterns or make custom orders. We do this 100% free and do not take any proceeds from the shop locations or the customers. We also do not accept gifts or donations. Our hope is that this small act of encouragement will inspire you to go out and encourage someone else.
